A business woman

Moran just left for a job interview in San Francisco. When you get an invitation for an interview here, amongst all the details of how to get there and where to park your car, you are also advised on what to wear. For this specific interview Moran was asked to dress up in a business suit. She went buying one especially for the event, but ended up wearing another suit she feels more comfortable with. This is the final result, which you have to admit, is very impressive:Good luck, Moran!

!There's nature out there

After persistent tries, I was finally able to convince Amir to go traveling today. Now that he has more free time for himself, he really enjoys staying at home reading a book...but since that's what I normally do during the week, I prefer going out on weekends - and so we did.

The destination we chose is supposedly close to home - Point Reyes National Seashore. It's a national park (free entrance) up north on highway number 1. Apparently, it's not as nearby as it seems on the map, and it took us an hour and 45 minutes to get there. But it was so worth it!

The lighthouse. It's a nice way down to the lighthouse, and when going up, the stairs are numbered, so that you'd know how many stairs are left to climb (308 in total).
Amir tested his bad knee by going down those stairs. It's in a much better shape :)

The main attraction of Point Reyes is whale watching. It's one of the best places on the American land to spot whales, while they are crossing to Mexico (winter) and back (spring). As the rangers stated on the board, 2 whales were spotted today on their way to Mexico. We weren't that lucky.
But we did get to see dolphins!!

And, for the first time, we saw some Elephant Seals. They really look like elephants with this trunk instead of a nose...

Back to English

My computer was sent back to Lenovo today, with a huge list of things they need to fix. So, I'm back to using Hannah's computer, and therefore - back to English.

Today was a Chinese consumption function. As usual, food & drinks were served, and a cultural show took place afterwards. In the drinks section we got to taste ice tea with tapioca, the food was all about Chinese dishes, and the cultural show combined dancing and playing traditional musical instruments. Was fun!

Tapioca anyone?

Writing your name / year of birth / whatever else you want on a sticker for your shirt. There was one guy with a sticker saying "I hate Macro" in Chinese... With these stickers, it was very easy to spot people my age...I was wearing a "year of the dragon" sticker, which actually resembles a dragon, and I easily found out that Fiona and David were born in the same lucky year. Amir was born during the year of the goat, so he (smartly) chose not to wear a sticker...

המוזיאון שלא ביקרנו בו

דיוויד גילה שבכל יום רביעי השלישי בחודש, מוזיאון האקדמיה למדע פותח את שעריו בחינם. כיוון שזה המוזיאון הכי חם בעיר כרגע, שמחתי ללכת שוב, למרות שכבר הייתי. החלטנו לצאת מוקדם כדי להקדים את התור, אבל תנועה של יותר משעה עיכבה אותנו וכשהגענו התור כבר השתרך לאורך שבילי הגולדן-גייט פארק. החלטנו לבדוק עד כמה הוא ארוך, אבל אפילו לא הגענו לסוף כדי להחליט שלא שווה לחכות... יותר מקילומטר של המתנה, וכל הממתינים עוד ירמסו אחד את השני גם בתוך המוזיאון.
ניסינו להסיק מסקנות ליום רביעי החינמי בחודש הבא, אבל חוץ מהרעיון לעשות קמפינג בכניסה כל הלילה לא מצאנו מסקנות חכמות. יש לנו חודש לחשוב.

זה התור בחלק הרחוק ביותר שראינו. הוא עוד המשיך להתפתל...

כיוון שכבר היינו בבגולדן-גייט פארק ממש ליד הגן היפני, ובדיוק בזמן שבו הכניסה לגן היא בחינם (שני, רביעי ושישי בין 9 ל-10 בבוקר), נכנסנו ועשינו סיבוב. (הביקור הקודם שלי בגן היפני מתועד כאן)

משם המשכנו לחוף הצמוד לפארק. חוף ממש מרשים, ארוך ורחב, עם גלים גבוהים, שחפים, צדפים ואצות.

אז נסענו לעתיקות של בית מרחץ ציבורי, לא רחוק מהחוף. עוד מקום חינמי לבקר בו :)

אחרי ארוחת צהרים אמריקאית טיפוסית (צ'יזבורגר וצ'יפס), החלטנו לחצות לצד השני, דרך גשר הזהב. נסענו על הגשר, החנינו את האוטו, והחלפנו את ההליכה היומית שלנו לחוף של אלבני בהליכה נמרצת על הגשר וחזרה.

סוף שבוע רגוע

אמיר לא היה צריך ללמוד כל הסופ"ש. ובנוסף, זה היה סופ"ש ארוך, כי ביום שני חל "יום הנשיא" (באנגלית זה נשמע יותר טוב). מרוב שזה חריג, ובגלל שירד גשם, לא כל כך ידענו איך למלא את כל הזמן הפנוי הזה שנפל עלינו פתאום, אז בין סרט (מהאינטרנט), לספר (אפילו אמיר התחיל ספר חדש!), למפגש עם חברים -- בישלנו. הנה כמה תמונות שימחישו.

ההצעה

בין השנה הראשונה לשנייה, בחופשת הקיץ, הסטודנטים אמורים לעשות התמחות. ההתמחות היא בעצם עבודה זמנית בחברה כלשהי, בתפקיד כלשהו, שיאפשר לסטודנט להתנסות בעבודה, ליצור קשרים ואולי לקבל הצעת עבודה מאותה חברה עם סיום הלימודים. תהליך חיפוש העבודה מאורגן חלקית על ידי האוניברסיטה, וחברות רבות מגיעות עד לאוניברסיטה כדי לערוך ראיונות, שיחות, ארוחות ערב וכו', כדי לגייס סטודנטים לתקופת הקיץ.

מאז שחזרנו מארגנטינה אמיר היה עסוק בראיונות עבודה והכנה אליהם. לכל ראיון צריך ללמוד על החברה, על המוצרים שלה, מה טוב בהם ומה כדאי לשפר, איך החברה מנוהלת ועד כמה היא רווחית. אחרי סדרות של ראיונות עבודה במספר חברות, סוף סוף ההשקעה השתלמה. אמיר קיבל הצעת עבודה לקיץ מ-Amazon! זה אומר שבקיץ (אמצע יוני עד סוף אוגוסט) אמיר יעבוד באמזון בסיאטל, בתפקיד של Product Manager. אני, כמובן, אצטרף, אלא אם אתחיל לעבוד לפני כן...

מיד אחרי השיחה המשמחת עם אמזון בה התבשרנו שאמיר התקבל לעבודה, הזמנו כמה חברים להרים כוסית של שמפניה :)

!Unbelievable

Guess what? My laptop is finally back from Lenovo's labs, and...it's not my laptop!!

I know it sounds unreal, but I assure you, it is not my laptop. I sent a T61 laptop to be added a bluetooth device that should have been installed from the beginning, and I got in return a dirty used T60 laptop with my hard drive in it! And on top of that -- the bluetooth doesn't work!

I know, it can only happen to me, I know that. Luckily, I've got Amir to help me fight windmills (he's currently on the phone, describing the problem and demanding a brand new computer...).

You can guess how good my mood is at the moment... :(

The coast

Today we spent a day in the car. That's more-or-less the summary of what we did, when in between, we also spent some time in Monterey's touristic streets and shops, Carmel-by-the-sea's touristic streets and shops (and beach), and Santa Cruz's pier. Why did we spend the day in the car, then? Because it takes 2.5 hours to get to that area, and it was freezing, even though the sun was out...

I know it sounds like I'm complaining, but we did have a great day! :)
